This years Met Gala theme is about celebrating black style. That's something to chew on because the Met Gala is a society event where celebrities lead the way with high fashion. The official theme is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

I'm not sure the Met Gala understands the social ramifications a theme like this can have. Because for some blacks, this means pimped out old school player's ball style. However, for an understanding of what Met Gala style is, lets revisit Beyonce.

Beyonce is a total winner when it comes to getting dressed for the Met Gala. Above are her Givenchy looks from 2014-2016. On the left, the jewel encrusted sheer dress from 2015 was one of those looks that can change the trajectory of a spectator's life especially the way the genie ponytail pulled it all together. The sheer dress made it hard to follow in her own footsteps but she did the next year in 2016 "goth" style in a latex nude skin dress that was absolutely stunning.

Beyonce's 2014 all black and beaded look in the center was super classy. She became the backdrop for an photo that captured a voyeuristic screen shot of black America like we haven't seen since the civil rights.

All of this explains the Met Gala's dress code and expectations. One blog said that Superfine was a celebration of black clothing reaching back to the slave trade and all throughout the diaspora. This brings to mind Balmain's 2023 Spring runway show.

If the Met Gala is looking for tailored style from the black community then there is no place to start than the urban paradise where the playa's play. Below is an interview and viewing of a few looks from Bishop Magic Don Juan's 2023 player's ball.

But ultimately, Superfine is about the Black Dandy man stereotyped throughout history. For an undertaking like this to be a modern success, then we need Sean Jean.
