Relaxed Hair?

Sister's hair has been growing these days whether natural or relaxed. During the 1990's black women did anything they could to straighten their hair to fit the western standard of that time. The backlash from that was that black women were accused of being ashamed of the natural texture of their hair. The pros from this time period was that there was a better understanding of the relationship between the hair products and the hair. These products included relaxers and the hot comb.

One particular relaxed hair style was the wet wrap. This process was so high-maintenance that I haven't seen it done correctly on YouTube yet. You wrap relaxed hair around your hair while wet using a wrapping mouse. You sit under a hooded dryer until the entire hair was dry. Then you bumped it with a curling iron, wrapped under a scarf at night and you had a flowing straight style.

If you want to watch the #1 seminar about black hair from the 1990's, YouTube @Cathty Howse and watch the playlist.

Since then, two major breakthroughs have helped in understanding black hair.

  1. Understanding porosity. Porosity occurs in 3 levels. Low Medium and High. Most people's hair leans on the low or high side. Porosity basically determines how well a product will work on your hair. A product may promise miraculous results, however, if it's not for your porosity, it probably won't work.

2. The flat iron. Being so much easier to use than a hot comb, a flatiron can be used to completely straighten natural hair or for styling relaxed hair.
