Afro-textured hair in its full glory is a statement hairstyle. During the 1970's wearing an afro meant politics. The hairstyle assisted in the resistance of post-civil rights oppression. Political activist Angela Davis said, "I am remembered as a hairdo; it is humiliating because it reduces a politics of liberation to a politics of fashion." The afro also gave blacks a backdoor pass to the hippie movement which extended into the 1970's.

Big hair is back due to the natural hair movement and once again, hair is politics. Today its the CROWN ACT (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair) Movement. The CROWN ACT is a stand against discrimination based on hair texture which still goes on. With all the better products on the market for black hair now, natural hair is growing more and is bigger than ever. Fashion is always politics and every hairstyle is a statement. The question is, if you are rocking natural hair that has grown like a lion's mane, what do you wear?

The outfit above compliments big hair. A nice bowtie or tie neck blouse, not tucked in, over a knit pencil skirt. People are now dressing in a way that's a postmodern grunge. A layered look borrowing style from any period in history. A pair of 80's loafers completes this look. (bobby socks are optional)
